Thank you for this article, Jenn! It’s about time someone wrote about something like this – it’s also about time someone understands my pain. (I’d normally put “lol” here but I’m not laughing.) I can’t do small talk because I don’t care about the person’s answers. Why bother when you just don’t give a crap? (I’ve heard politeness is a virtue so I’m using “cleaner” language.) Being an introvert with an anxiety disorder makes things even worse so there’s that issue as well. Thank you for understanding where we’re coming from, Jenn!

This is an interesting article… I don’t think of myself as an introvert, but I do agree that people need to have more deep and meaningful conversations – they’re the best ones!

My only contribution is that, in my experience, it’s simply not socially possible to launch into a “deep” topic with a virtual stranger… That’s why small talk and light conversation is necessary to grease the wheels! But overall, I like the idea of trying to have more meaningful conversations. I’ll keep that in mind going forward. Good topics! Food for thought.

for me it would be:
2: “why” questions…….like why are we alive, why are we here? why am i like this?
11: things that go bump in the night….. i’m kinda into ghost stuff, aliens etc
14 the universe…….. like this one and possible parallel ones….. what would i be like in a different / parallel universe…..alternate realities multiverse etc

Yesterday, I tried engaging someone in a conversation of how high numbers of farmers in one Indian state (it was being aired on BBC radio) are committing suicide cause of frustration with a 3 year drought but they instead chose to talk about someone else drunkenness. I just had to quit the small talk.

Agreed. Small talk is painful. And on average there isn’t enough time to dig deeper…or when there is, then I’m usually disappointed by what I learn. 😉
